Tile access hatch: how to choose
A hatch is bought once and opened for ten years after. Three mistakes that show within a month: the wrong size, cement adhesive on the door and a joint with no gap.
Size: the frame opening, not the clear one
The size in the name is the frame opening — the hole you leave in the wall. The clear opening you reach through to the valves is 30–55 mm smaller: an AluLight II 300×400 gives roughly 250×350 clear. Hence the rule: first measure the largest part of the assembly and think how a hand gets to it, then choose. Guide values: a water meter and a valve — from 200×300; meters with filters and valves — 300×400 or 400×500; a water manifold — from 400×600; a concealed cistern and its fittings — by the maker's panel. Pick a door that is a multiple of the tile plus joints — then the hatch disappears in the layout.
Which type goes where
- Secret 3.0 (300×500, 400×600, 500×500) — push-open, aluminium frame, gypsum-fibre door; the main choice for bathrooms and kitchens, carries 11–22 kg of tiling on the door.
- Zhelezyaka Mini (200×250, 300×300, 400×500) — a compact push-open with a steel frame and three-way hinge adjustment; for small niches with meters.
- AluLight II (300×400, 500×500) — the door lifts out completely, aluminium frame; indoors only and only in vertical walls — not in floors, not outdoors.
- Korob-budget 30 (200×200 to 400×500) — for painting, plasterboard door; for plasterboard boxings, not meant for tiles.
- Nevidimka 600×600 and 800×800 — floor hatches for foot traffic; the 800×800 has gas struts because the lid with tiles weighs over 25 kg.
Fitting in a wall
Make the opening 2–5 mm larger than the frame size (5–10 for AluLight), fix the frame at four points minimum: into brick and concrete with 6×30–6×40 plugs and screws, into a plasterboard partition with screws into the framing or a timber nogging. Do not fill with foam — it distorts the frame. Tiles on the door no thicker than 10 mm; the tile overhang past the door edge at the hinge up to 30 mm (50 for Zhelezyaka), on the other sides no more than a third of the door area. A 2–3 mm joint around the door, otherwise it binds and stops opening.
What to glue the tiles with
The makers of Secret and AluLight require a class R adhesive — epoxy or polyurethane, in a 2–3 mm layer: cement adhesive pulls the door as it dries and the tile eventually comes off. Consumption is 0.5–1.5 kg per hatch, so buy a small pack. That is how we do it: a separate class R adhesive for the hatch, the rest of the wall on ordinary cement adhesive; class R is bought at tile shops, we do not carry it. Check the weight of the tiling: door area × (2.4 × tile thickness in mm + 1.5 × adhesive thickness) — for a Secret 300×500 with 10 mm porcelain that is about 3.7 kg against 11 allowed.
Floor
A floor hatch is recessed into the screed; the lid takes tiles up to 18 mm and foot traffic; such hatches are not rated for a car. Do not fit a hatch in underfloor heating or in a wet zone without waterproofing. For an 800×800 lid the struts are mandatory — otherwise it cannot be lifted with one hand.
Example: a bathroom
Water meters with filters behind 30×60 tiles and a concealed cistern: a Zhelezyaka Mini 400×500 (236 ₾) for the meters and a Secret 3.0 300×500 (354 ₾) under the cistern panel — 590 ₾, plus class R adhesive, primer and coloured sealant for the joints.
